Lenten Schedule

ASH WEDNESDAY

On February 10, at 6:30 PM we will be having an Ash Wednesday service.  For some of you this may be a new experience. Therefore, let me share some insight about this church tradition.

Ash Wednesday is the start of the Lenten season in the church calendar year. This church tradition can be thought of in terms of the church tradition of Advent. No doubt you’re more familiar with Advent. The Advent tradition is lighting of candles with the attempt to prepare our hearts and minds to receive the Christ child. The Lenten tradition is a time to prepare our hearts and minds for the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Advent and Lent are church traditions to simply help Christ-followers to focus their attention and attitude on Jesus Christ.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter. Ash Wednesday starts us on a journey that can be characterized by fasting, repentance and sacrifice.

What’s the deal with ashes? Ashes which are made from palm branches are placed on the forehead in the symbol of the cross signifying the repentant believer sees himself as a sinner and the sacrifice of Christ the only means of salvation. There is biblical significance to ashes. Ashes were used in ancient times to express grief. The gesture was also used to express sorrow for sins and faults. In Job 42: 5-6 Job says to the Lord, “My ears have heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

Lent and Advent are simply two celebrations within the church calendar. Advent is a spiritual time as we walked towards Bethlehem. Lent is a spiritual time as we walked towards Calvary.
